The trip was originally conceived as partly a celebration of Thom’s 50th birthday. We all held grand visions of black balloons and “Over the HIll” T-shirts.

The Italians found the idea of renewing marriage vows as novel, so it became impossible to find a priest or official to perform the ceremony.  We did get the Mayor of the Commune of Scovicille to attend and lend some sense of official sanction.  (Scovicille is the town borough that encompasses Montestigliano.) Jerry performed the ceremony claiming official status as a retired police officer and holder of an expired diplomatic passport.

Thom and Lori chose this near perfect setting to renew their vows.  This became the major event of the trip.

But, Thom trumped the plan at their Annual Summer Party by proposing to Lori and together they pledged to renew their marriage vows at Montestigliano.

Susan presented Thom and Lori with a custom made plate honoring the event.

Of course dinner (eating) was a big part of the event.  The dinner was catered by Susan and prepared by her staff.  As with all Italian dinners, it was excellent.

Massimo, the agricultural manager of Montestigliano, discusses events with the Mayor.

Live entertainment followed the dinner and the guests had cocktails and conversation.

This was a fun event, but we should also remember that it was serious as well. Thom and Lori took this occasion to seriously exchange new vows and reaffirm their love and commitment before friends in a romantic ceremony and beautiful location.
