esseras.
We arrive at about 4:00 PM after stopping for a late lunch in Narbonne.
Not counting the stops, it is about a two hour drive from St.Remy
or Avignon.
So,
where is Cesseras, anyway? Click here for a Map
of the Area.
Driving
around in the back country can be a bit confusing. There are a lot
of roads and they vary in size from wide two lane roads to narrow
one lane. Combine that with signs for places you have never heard
of, can't find on the map and couldn't pronounce if you could find
. It gives one the feeling of being a bit lost. Eventually that
sign you are looking for comes into view.
Bernard
had told us to take a right at the phone booth as we come into town
and the house would be immediately on our right. Sure enough there
it was tucked neatly behind a stone wall.
We are greeted
by Yvonne. She manages the house on site for Bernard and Isabelle.
She lives across the street and works half a block away at the post
office. Yvonne took us on a tour while the six of us did the usual
dance to decide who gets which room.
We knew we would
be tired and unfamiliar with the area, so we had asked that Yvonne
prepare or Saturday dinner - something local. She had put together
a seafood paella, a salad and side dishes. It was all ready to go.
All we had to do was heat it up when we were ready.
The
house is outstanding. It is fully equipped. That does not mean just
pots and pans. There is a good assortment of spices and condiments
for cooking. There are shelves and shelves of interesting books
in both French and English. There are CD's and VCR tapes and all
the equipment to use them.
When you enter
this house you are not confronted with the typical sterile rental
environment. You are in a home. You are home.
Oh, did I mention
that there are about a dozen bottles of local red and white wines.
All very good. They are there on the honor system. $5 for the red
and $4 for the white. Just put the money in the jar.
Well, it seemed
the only reasonable thing to do was to open the wine and settle
in. We did just that.
Dinner
was great. Having it prepared was one of our best ideas. We were
able to settle in and spend a relaxing evening while we developed
our plans to explore the region.
Bernard, our
landlord, called from Paris to check in and see if we were comfortable
or in need of anything.
Did
I mention the well equipped kitchen? Cleaning up after dinner, Doris
provides guidance as Lori loads the dishwasher.
Note the art
on the wall. Their are outstanding pieces throughout the house.
