msterdam was our first stop. This was not intentional, but came
about because we were flying on Northwest Airlines.
We had
mileage tickets on NW so were stuck on their routes. Still no problem
getting to Pairs or Nice, but other complications made us finally
say, "We've never seen Amsterdam. Now is the time."
We left Seattle
on a direct polar route flight to Amsterdam. Travel started on April
17, 2002. That put us into to Schiphol
Airport at about 7 AM European time on the 18th.
Schiphol
is well organized. There is a train station right in the airport.
This made it easy to activate our Eurail
passes and make reservations for the next leg of the trip. A good
thing, too. Our preferred route was all booked and the alternate
suggested by the ticket agent worked better. The photo to the left
was taken in the train station at Schiphol. This airport is clean
and efficient. The train agents were very helpful.
After completing
our train reservations we took the train into Amsterdam.
Our first impressions
of Amsterdam are not good. However, in fairness, we have to point
out that we spent only one day there. And, that day was a jet lag
